China’s State Council put a nationwide ban on plastic bags. The cabinet has demanded all stores (from major supermarkets to small shops) stop offering plastic bag-free after June1. According to the rule, retailers who give free bags to shoppers face fines of up to 10,000 yuan and those who provided bags thinner than 0.025mm can be fined up to 20,000 yuan.

Yesterday, iPod accessories on Saturday, June 1, China's new ban on plastic bags came into force. We are glad to see that many customers bring cloth bags or shopping baskets themselves. Though this would inevitably cause inconvenience to the shoppers now, many residents said they should help protect the environment.

But some small businesses, including street vendors and retailers in wet markets, were found to be providing free plastic bags. The main problem is that they are afraid of losing customers if they charge for the bags.

There is still a small group of people who don’t know the rule. A grocery stall owner said that when she charged for the bag and the customer became aggressive and said he was going to complain to the management office.

After the rule of ban on plastic bags putting out, many manufactures, especially the small ones, have gradually closed down and do iPhone Accessory  something else, such as starting producing cloth bags or thick plastic bags.

China spends 37 million barrels of crude oil on plastic bag production every year. The nationwide ban will no doubt help save fuels for China. Ban on plastic bags can reduce the "white waste" and save resources. Then it’s good both for us and the whole world. It really shows that China is a responsible country.

The environmental group Greenpeace issued a statement welcoming the Chinese ban. “The State Council’s announcement to ban free plastic bags is a perfect case to combine the two of the major forces in environment protection: public participation and government policy guidance,” Greenpeace said.

Internationally, legislation to discourage plastic bag use has been passed in parts of South Africa, Ireland and Taiwan, where authorities either tax shoppers who use them or impose fees on companies that distribute them. Bangladesh already bans them, as do at least 30 remote Alaskan villages. Last year, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to ban petroleum-based plastic grocery bags.
