630 American showed that people are happier when they spend money on others,
even though they think spending the money on themselves will make them happier.
A psychologist at the
Researchers asked the 600 volunteers to evaluate their total sense of happiness
and report their annual income and detail their monthly spending including the
bills, spending on buying presents for themselves or others and charity
donation.
Dunn claimed in a statement:” No matter how much they earn those who
spent money on others reported greater happiness, while the people who spent
more money on themselves did not.”
Dunn’s group also surveyed the different 16 employees at a company in
The researchers gave the volunteers some money range from $US5 to $US20 and told
half of them how to spend this money. The result showed that people who spend
money on someone else or other things feel much happier.
Dunn said:” The finding shows that very minor alterations in spending
allocations -- as little as $US5 -- may be enough to produce real gains in
happiness on a given day.”
