IT has been four years since I was first introduced to Pyramids Egyptian Restaurant and, standing the test of time, it has remained a staple of my favorite places to dine. Serving up some of the best Middle Eastern food in Shenzhen, this> You'll be hard-pressed to find Pyramids, hidden away as it is. But as the saying goes, good things are hard to find. A tiny sign protruding from a narrow alley just off Shennan Road is the> On entering, you 'll notice a small prayer room to the left, as well as a TV broadcasting news from Al-Jazeera. Make no mistake, this is a Muslim restaurant with a Muslim owner and largely Muslim clientele and the religious influence naturally carries over to the food . You won't find any pork or alcohol> What you will find, however, is a good atmosphere, tasty food, and solid service.

The 5-year - old Pyramids is small, but cozy and clean. An assortment of plants and Muslim art decorates the walls. It has the feeling of a family restaurant, especially as the Egyptian owner, his Chinese wife, and their children are usually present.

Opening the menu, the first surprise is the prices, starters for> Fresh home-baked Arab or French bread, at three yuan a piece, is a perfect accompaniment to these starters. Rice is used in> For the entrée, we chose the mixed grill and the shish kebab, consisting of grilled chicken, lamb, and beef. These were accompanied by classic crinkle cut French fries. The meat itself was slightly overcooked, yet every last morsel was eaten.

The rest of the entrée menu is long and diverse, with a selection of pastas, seafood and various Egyptian meat dishes. Best of all, none of these dishes cost more than 40 yuan and come as low as 25 yuan, so your wallet is safe.

Like the appetizers, the drink menu also runs at a mere 10 yuan with a selection of fresh juices and coffees. Teas and sodas cost> Several nice touches complement the dining experience, including the free pitchers of water and free napkins. It's always baffled me why napkins aren't free in China.
